Evacuation lifted in Atlanta's Little 5 Points after gas spill

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A gas spill forced the evacuation of several businesses in Atlanta's Little Five Points area on Tuesday.

The scare started at a Chevron station on Moreland Avenue around 9 a.m. Firefighters responding to a strong odor found that gasoline has leaked into the sewer system.

Janet Ward of the Atlanta Fire Department said that a car had apparently hit a pump at the gas station Monday night, causing the leak in an underground pipe.

The firefighter shut down a two-block stretch of Moreland Avenue between the Front Page restaurant and the Vortex Bar & Grill.

At least 262 gallons of gas has leaked so far, Ward said.

All streets were reopened just after 7 p.m.

"The tests that they ran showed that the levels of gas are safe. There's no danger," Ward said.

Josh Sagarin, the owner of the Front Page Patio Bar and Grill, said his business was on the outer edge of the closure. While walk-in customers were still able to be served, the 10-hour evacuation had an impact on business, he said.

FOX 5's George Franco said that several businesses remained closed even after the evacuation was lifted.
