Arlington extends shelter hours ahead of cold snap

Posted: Updated:

Northern Virginia is making preparations for the Arctic air on its way to the region.

Arlington County said Monday that it will temporarily keep its emergency winter shelter open during the day. Usually it is open only from 4 p.m. to 9 a.m., but the county wants to make sure that people come in from the streets as temperatures are expected to dip into single digits.

In Fairfax County, officials are reminding people that the county's libraries and community centers also serve as warming centers for people who need to come in from the cold. And the county animal shelter is temporarily offering emergency housing for pets that do not have access to indoor shelter.

The record low for Jan. 7 in Washington is 5 degrees, set in 1884.
