DeKalb County court records found scattered on Decatur road

Posted: Updated:
DECATUR, Ga. -

Hundreds of DeKalb County court records containing personal information were found on a busy Decatur road on Friday.

The documents had sensitive information about police officers and judges, along with social security numbers of people arrested. Some of the papers were shredded, others weren't. Included in the documents was a list of police officer names, badge numbers and schedules. There was even a printed email with the home and cell phone numbers of a judge.

Decatur officials tell FOX 5 that all of the documents came out of the DeKalb County courthouse. Police believe the county hired a company to shred the documents and that company lost them.

Law mandates that elected officials hire outside companies that are approved by the state to do the shredding. In many cases, these companies go into the offices and shred there while a worker watches.

Police do not yet know which office the scattered records came from.
