Firefighters battle fire at Falls Church nail supply store

Posted: Updated:

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue brought in extra manpower and resources Friday to keep their emergency workers safe this afternoon as they battled not only fire -- but also ice.

More than 100 Fairfax County firefighters descended on the Skyline Nail Supply store in Falls Church at around 3 p.m. after a two-alarm fire broke out in the back storage area.

“It was black smoke coming out of the windows, like a lot” said Rodrigo Rodriguez. “From the front door, it was a lot of smoke, all the windows, the back door and the roof.”

There were plenty of challenges on this call, starting with the flammable chemicals inside a back storage area that made it hard to extinguish the blaze.

“The fire was a deep-seated fire that’s kind of way back in the building here in the back side,” said Capt. William Moreland of Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

And arctic temperatures outside took a toll on emergency crews.

“Obviously, it is very cold today with the wind chill factors out here,” Moreland said. “It does create some hazards.”

Crews kept water flowing so hoses wouldn't freeze and stepped carefully on streets turned slick with ice.

A special vehicle was brought in to allow crews to rotate out of the cold for a few minutes and thaw out in a warm place.

“We check their vital signs,” said Ryan McGill of Fairfax County and Rescue. “They do get coffee. We have canteen unit to help out with that. We make sure that they are physically fit and healthy to go back to work.”

The fire did not spread to other stores and nobody was injured in the fire. Investigators do not yet know the cause of the fire.
