CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The first animal born to the Chicago Zoological Society in 2014 is a grey seal pup! He is the first of his species to ever be born at Brookfield Zoo.

This little one will bond with his mom, 10-year-old grey seal Lily, for several weeks before the public can see him. But the zoo will be sure to make an announcement when he does make his first appearance in the Pinniped Point exhibit.

CSZ says grey seal pups are born with "lanugo," or long white fur, giving this 2014 baby a very furry look. The lanugo is molted after two weeks to a month and replaced with stiffer, sturdier hair like his adult counterparts. He'll be sporting the new coat by the time visitors get their first look at him.

The pup was born at 7 a.m. New Year's Day, weighing in at 25 lbs. He is expected to quadruple his weight in the next month, thanks to his mom's nutrient-rich milk, before he is introduced to a fish diet.

Six grey seals now reside at Brookfield Zoo, which is the largest group to live together of any accredited institution in North America. The overall population for this region consists of five males and 17 females, so this guy is a welcome addition! He'll join his dad Boone, 10; male Minnow, 27; and females Tasha, 10, and Della, 23, sometime soon.

Wild grey seals are found on the coasts of the Eastern and Western North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea. Stop by Brookfield Zoo this January for a fun indoor trip for the whole family, while winter gets down to business outside.
