Phone app, Snapchat, experiences security breach

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

Usernames and phone numbers of nearly 5-million Snapchat users were posted online by hackers.

"A fraudster with the username can search the other social media and find out more about that person and then contact them through the phone number," said William "Professor Fraud" Kresse from Saint Xavier University.

And William Kresse, also known as Professor Fraud says that's the bigger problem.

Snapchat is the latest teen craze allowing users to send video, pictures and captions to a friend or complete stranger - after the recipient views the message it disappears.

The breach comes days after Gibson Security warned the photo messaging app of flaws in its Find Friends system.

"Their reaction was to post a blog saying, making fun of it sort of and that it's not a problem at all. Well they got burned," said Kresse.

In response, Snapchat posted on its blog, "We will be releasing an updated version of the Snapchat application that will allow Snapchatters to opt out of appearing in Find Friends after they have verified their phone number."

Beyond the latest breach, techie Porter Haney says a bigger problem could be brewing on Snapchat - Snapchats of crime fueling drug rings, prostitution and child pornography.

"There is no way to stop that yet and people in a platform that's growing this fast, there is no regulation around it," said Haney, CEO of

"One thing is for sure. The 3 billion or 4 billion dollar offers that were given to them by Facebook and Google, I think those have disappeared," said Kresse.
