CAMDEN, N.J. -

A New Jersey father who says he accidentally shot his 2-year-old son Tuesday night has been arrested and charged, police say.

Officers were call to Cooper University Hospital at 10:52 p.m., but the original incident occurred at 21st Street and Pierce Avenue in Camden.

Investigators say they found a 2-year-old boy was being treated at the hospital for a gunshot wound to the left arm and left leg.

The boy's father, 38-year-old Sergio Rivera of Camden, told police he accidentally shot his son while inside of a vehicle at 21st and Pierce while the family, including the boy's mother and grandmother, were in the car.

Rivera drove to the hospital following the shooting, but police say he was uncooperative with detectives investigating the incident.

The gun, a 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun, was taken from the vehicle, and Rivera was found to be in possession of several Percocet pills, police said.

Rivera was charged with counts of weapons possession – including by a person not to have a weapon due to a prior drug distribution conviction – aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

He was sent to the county jail on bail set at $185,000 cash or bond.

Camden County Police Chief J. Scott Thomson said in a news release, "Our prayers are with this child as he recovers. Regardless of whether the shooting was intentional or accidental, it's the culture of violence and the illegal possessing of firearms that lies at the heart of our greatest challenge in reducing gun crime."
