HANOVER, Md. -

Anne Arundel County Police say it is one of the most appalling, shocking and disturbing things they have ever seen. A four-year-old left in a car while her mother spent the day inside a casino.

It was a security guard at Maryland Live! Casino that heard the crying. What he found was a scared and cold child left in an SUV by herself in the casino's parking garage on New Year’s Eve.

“I could care less if they had the whole car set up like a day care center,” points out Lieutenant T.J. Smith with the Anne Arundel County Police Department. “That child should not have been left in a car alone.”

Anne Arundel County police say the child had been in the car since 10 a.m., which is when the child's mother, 24-year-old Alicia Brown, entered the casino.

“It’s a shock to the conscience,” says Lt. Smith. “Those of us who are parents, even those of us who aren’t, the first thing I did when I got the call was gasp because you hear something like this and you wouldn’t believe someone would do it.”

Police say it also appears Brown put some sort of sheet up to cover the windows.

She is being charged with child abuse in the 2nd degree, confined unattended child under 8 years old, and neglect of a minor.

“Personally I don’t really care what her excuse is,” Lt. Smith says. “There is not a good enough excuse to leave a four-year-old child inside a vehicle in cold temperatures.”

The child was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated and released to a relative.

The mother is still behind bars. She is being held on $150,000 bail.

FOX 5 contacted Maryland Live! Casino, but our call was not returned.
