Two hurt in Douglas high-rise basement fire

A basement caught fire Tuesday night in a 22-story high-rise building in the South Side Douglas neighborhood.

The fire started just before 8 p.m. in the basement of the building in the 500 block of East 32nd Street, according to Fire Media Affairs.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 8:30 p.m., and paramedics took two people in fair-to-serious condition to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, Fire Media Affairs said.

Dispatch reports indicated they were a man and a woman in their 70s.

Two other people refused medical treatment, officials said.

Crews ventilated the building and allowed the residents back inside by 9 p.m.
