4 unattended vehicles left running stolen in Prince George's County

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -

Prince George's County police are reminding the public to avoid leaving a car unattended while it's running. Four vehicles were stolen Monday morning within an hour and a half of time.

The first happened along Captain Bayne Court in Upper Marlboro. Car owner Damian Jenifer says he went outside to warm up his 2005 BMW around 6 a.m. He was back inside the house for about ten minutes before he realized it was gone.

"It's just discomforting to know people can come take your car from your own driveway,” says Jenifer. “It's like you're not even safe in your own neighborhood.”

Over the next 90 minutes, police say cars that had been left running were stolen from Herrington Drive in Upper Marlboro and Palmetto Drive in Bowie.

Neighbors tell FOX 5 a woman dropping her child off with a caretaker left her car's engine running as she stepped inside a home along Bright Sun Drive in Bowie. When she came out, it was gone.

Police say these crimes are preventable.

"Would you leave your wallet on the counter in the grocery store or convenience store and walk away? Please don't do that with your vehicle," says Officer Harry Bonds of Prince George’s County Police.

Investigators are working to recover the stolen vehicles, which along with the BMW, include a Nissan Maxima, Lexus and an Acura.

Anyone with information is asked to call Prince George's County Police.
