GLENCOE (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The Chicago Botanic Garden hosted the millionth visitor of the year to its north suburban conservatory on Monday, the first time it has reached that milestone in its 41-year history.

The 385-acre botanic garden, located in Glencoe, credits the 5 percent increase in attendance from last year to weather, but also expanded programming that includes evening concerts and wellness classes, a spokesman said.

"There's been a real resurgence back to nature for our visitors and members," Jim Boudreau, vice president of marketing and development said.

He hopes the attendance milestone becomes a new standard for the garden, which had its highest monthly attendance in August, when 170,150 visited, he said.

The garden did not acknowledge the millionth visitor, Boudreau said, because it plans to celebrate with the entire community. It will celebrate by offering $10 parking for visitors and a 20 percent discount at the café for members the weekend of Jan. 11-12.
