Marietta fallen soldier laid to rest

Posted: Updated:

ACWORTH, Ga. (AP) - A metro Atlanta soldier who was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on Dec. 17 has been laid to rest at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.

A memorial service was held Saturday for Sgt. 1st Class Omar Forde, 28, of Marietta.

Forde was based in Fort Riley, Kan. He died in the crash on Dec. 17 along with five other soldiers.

The Marietta Daily Journal reports one of Forde's close friends delivered the eulogy and recalled Forde's days as a defensive back on the Kennesaw Mountain High School football team.

Army officials have said Forde enlisted in 2005. He had been deployed to Iraq twice, and was serving his first deployment to Afghanistan at the time of the crash.
