Study: Teens ditching Facebook for other social media sites

What does 2014 have in store for your life online? If you're young, it may not involve Facebook as much as an older brother, sister, mom, or dad.

Even though 94 percent of teens use Facebook, it may not be their go-to social media site much longer.

15-year-old Dahlia Arteaga says out of all the social media platforms she uses Twitter the most.

"Facebook is kind of getting old, everybody is using Twitter now so I go on Twitter more," said Arteaga in an interview with Fox 32's Tisha Lewis.

That statement is becoming more and more common according to anthropologist Daniel Miller. Miller's recent social media study in Europe discovered that Facebook is "basically dead" for teens between 16 and 18 years old. Miller says that young Facebook exiles are using Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp.

"Family members like my grandma or aunties, they are starting to get a Facebook now and then I use Twitter but they'll usually say things to me on Facebook and I'll say something back and that's just that," said Anthony Dean, 17 years old.

Dean's opinion supports Miller's research. Miller says most teens only use Facebook to stay connected with parents and relatives and "many are embarrassed to even be associated with it," said Miller.

"I mostly use Twitter. Facebook is a lot of advertising and stuff… Facebook got boring, people just use it for likes and stuff," said Kaitlyn Duff, 15 years old.

"Most teens and younger folks, if you will, Millennials, Gen Y, are leaving to use tools that make the most sense for them - Instagram, share images and now video, Vine, Snapchat," said Blagica Bottigliero, Founder and President, Zlato Digital.

Bottigliero says the goal is to get what you want without the clutter from ads, feeds and more.

"I wouldn't be surprised that the UK study is also apparent here in the United States. Teens, younger folks are leaving Facebook to go to other applications," said Bottigliero.

No response from Facebook about all of this.Daniel Miller's study included 9 simultaneous 15-month studies in 8 countries. Miller says it all shows new media's success depends on factors other than function because technically Facebook works better than its contenders.
