Fighting loneliness and envy at the holidays

Posted: Updated:

So you have no one to shop for, no one to skate with, and no one to keep you warm at yet another tree lighting. All fine. But to really make you feel alone this holiday season what if everyone around you decided to get engaged?

One survey found that more than a quarter of all proposals take place in November and December. And because privacy now means it never happened, evidence of those engagements all seem to find their way to the Internet: YouTube, yes, but also Facebook and Instagram.

"Know that you're by yourself but that's certainly different than being alone. That's a negative," says Dr. Jeff Gardere, a psychologist. He wants singles to enjoy their freedom, act a little selfish, and take the time to learn about themselves -- while they still can.

"I have a lot of single friends," Gardere says. "They're going to the movies every day, they're sitting in their pajamas, they can be selfish, they can eat their favorite foods and they can drink their favorite libations."

So yeah, take that, beautiful, blissful, recently engaged people!
