Pike Nurseries - Houseplants

Posted: Updated:

Most people are starting to take down their Christmas decorations which leave your home feeling bare. Houseplants are a great way to keep color and life in your home.

• Benefits of Houseplants

-Houseplants are a great way to decorate your home and give it some life

-Most houseplants also help clean the air of toxins making your home healthier by releasing oxygen and decreasing dust and pollutants in the air.

-They remove contaminants and help us fight colds.

• Determining Your Light

- The only thing you need to know when you come to Pike Nurseries to select your houseplant is what type of light the plant will receive.

- There's an easy way to determine your lighting condition:

Take a piece of white paper and hold your hand about 8 inches above the paper

• High Light: If you can clearly see the shadow from your hand and it has some definition

• Medium Light: There is a blurred shadow

• Low Light: No shadow

• Houseplant Options

o High Light

-Kalanchoe

-Succulents/Cactus

-Asparagus Fern

o Medium Light

-Orchids

-Bamboo

-Dracaena (some varieties)

o Low Light

-Sanseveria

-ZZ Plant

• Caring for Houseplant

-Keep houseplants watered so that the soil is just slightly moist to the touch

-Apply a good fertilizer like Bonide Liquid Plant Food

-Avoid placing in troubled spots – near heat or air conditioning ducts, on TV or radiator or between curtains and a frosty window
