4-alarm fire damages Baltimore church

Posted: Updated:
BALTIMORE -

Fire officials say a four-alarm fire that burned for hours at a northeast Baltimore church has been controlled.

Fire department spokesman Ian Brennan says the blaze broke out early Friday at Northwood-Appold United Methodist Church at Loch Raven Boulevard and Cold Spring Lane. The flames shot through the roof and spread to nearby buildings, including a school.

Brennan says it took more than 100 firefighters more than seven hours to control the fire. He says the church's steeple was still intact, but will have to come down. He says no injuries have been reported.

Because the fire involves a church, Brennan says the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives will help the city police and fire departments investigate.
