TINLEY PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police are investigating a "suspicious circumstance" this week in southwest suburban Tinley Park after a resident found Ku Klux Klan fliers advertising the organization's presence in the community.

A resident found in her driveway on Monday about 12:30 p.m. a zip-lock bag containing a candy cane and a flyer from the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, in the 7000 block of 173rd Place, said Tinley Park Deputy Police Chief Steve Vaccaro. The advertisements were found in at least four other driveways nearby.

"You can sleep tonight knowing the Klan is awake," read the flyer, according to Vaccaro.

Police placed the fliers and zip-lock bags into evidence, "in case something develops," but no crime has been committed at this point, Vaccaro said.

"I'm not aware of a big KKK presence," Vaccaro said, adding this is the first time he's seen an incident like this after more than 20 years with Tinley Park police.

Back in October, residents of southwest suburban New Lenox Township were disturbed to find Ku Klux Klan fliers seeking new recruits dispersed throughout neighborhoods, police said previously. But no criminal activity was reported at the time.
