CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Flags are being lowered to half-staff around Illinois in honor of an off-duty Cook County sheriff's investigator who was killed while trying to stop an armed robbery outside a family Christmas party.

Gov. Pat Quinn's office ordered U.S. and state flags to be lowered starting at sunrise Thursday in memory of Cuauhtemoc Estrada. The flags will remain lowered until sunset Saturday.

Estrada, a veteran of the sheriff's office of more than 20 years, intervened as two men attempted to rob his daughter and her boyfriend outside a VFW hall where the 50-year-old was hosting a family party in the 2800 block of St. Charles Road in Bellwood, prosecutors said.

One of the suspects shot Estrada in the chest before the two fled the scene, police said.

Brandon Jackson and Gage Thornton, both 22, were taken into custody Sunday and each charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted armed robbery. They were held without bond.

Estrada's wake is scheduled between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday at Russo's Chapel, 4500 Roosevelt Road, in Hillside.

Funeral services are scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Cathedral, 730 N. State St.
