Officers Drop Off Holiday Meals To Families of Fallen Officers

Posted: Updated:

Police Officers from around the region dropped off holiday meals to the families of fallen officers today. FOX 29's Drew Dickman followed the motorcade through the Delaware Valley and has the story.

Police officers from around the region dropped off holiday meals to the families of fallen officers today.

"They do it in rain, sleet or shine," said Officer Constance Nicholson with the Delaware River Port Authority.

With red and blue lights flashing, dozens of officers braved the elements in honor of their fallen colleagues.

FOX 29 trailed behind the police procession as they crossed the Walt Whitman Bridge into New Jersey. That's where Anne Skerski and her family received their Christmas dinner.

Her husband, Officer Gary Skerski, was killed more than seven years ago while trying to break up a robbery in progress. The 16-year veteran of the force was assigned to the 15th division when he died.

Police have been dropping off meals to Anne and her family for several years now.

"They're just such a great group of guys and they do so much for us and it's so nice that they remember all the families and they remember all the fallen officers also," said Skerski.

This service project is a personal one for police. Nicholson lost her supervisor, Corporal Chris Milito in January 2010 when he was hit by a train. Nicholson says she was honored to call him a friend.

"He was one of the best, always there for you when you needed. Just a good family man and a great supervisor as well," she said.

In all, officers delivered more than a dozen care packages to the families of officers killed in the line of duty.

Skerski calls the meals donated by the Fraternal Order of Police a nice gesture around the holidays.

"It's just nice to know, that people remember and that you're thought about. So yes, we appreciate it, me and the children," she said.
