Almost one year ago this week, Heidi Wallace decided she had enough. She didn’t feel healthy and needed a change. It was the beginning of an inspiring journey that she shared on our FOX 5 DC The Weighting Game Facebook page.
Hundreds of you joined the page too, sharing your successes, struggles and even asking each other for help. Heidi’s story caught our attention. In the past year, she’s proven to be a Weighting Game winner. The before and after pictures showed a dramatic change. What may surprise you is that she’s a fitness instructor.
We took in one of her cardio kickboxing classes at Shake Shake Fitness in Silver Spring, Md. She keeps it moving and doesn’t miss a beat.
"I just feel like a weight lifted off of me,” she said.
How much weight did she lose? We’ll get to that. But first, we need to go back a few years.
Heidi taught exercise classes, but wasn’t so fit for a fitness instructor. She couldn’t keep up with her own class. As an instructor though, she had a built-in excuse to stop and check on her students.
Then on December 30, 2012, she decided to practice what she preached to her students. She had the exercise part down, but needed to do a better job eating right. The turning point she said was “I got tired of being tired. I got tired of everybody else around me losing weight and me not.”
She stopped eating meat and became a vegan. As the weight melted away and the months went by, her students took notice.
“Watching her over the past year and a half has been amazing. She's been losing the weight. Every week there's a difference in her,” said Sarita Adarsh, who has taken Heidi’s class for more than a year.
During that time, she’s seen Heidi transform. Now Heidi is giving the instructions and doing the moves too. She’s fit, trim and started running races.
“It feels fantastic. My body moves better than it's ever been before,” Heidi said.
It’s inspired her students. She started a group called “Hit It with Heidi” to encourage, inspire and motivate others to get fit. Now when one of her students, Astrid Owono, doesn’t want to go to the gym, he thinks about what Heidi did and it drives him to go.
“She looks great. She actually used to be really, uh, thick,” he said, “and now she looks great!"
He lives in Canada, but now he comes to Heidi’s class every time he’s in town.
Heidi doesn’t see it that way. They may find her an inspiration, but for her, the students are her motivation.
“I don't want to let this person down because they are looking at me, ‘she can do it. I can do it.’ So that's what keeps me going and that's what keeps me inspired,” Heidi said.
Now Heidi shows off her "before and after pictures". She lost 65 pounds and feels 25 years younger. She tells people to do what's right for you. One step at a time.
