Snyder admits he's human and makes mistakes

How refreshing.

Most politicians are quick to grab the microphone and boast about all the good things they have done.

Rare is the person who will sit in front of the microphone and confess to their mistakes.

"One of the lessons in life I learned early was if you make a mistake, don't gloss it over; don't ignore it; sort of be honest about it and say you can learn from it."

That's Governor Rick Snyder being the non-career politician and then launching into a series of confessions of how he messed up the sell job on the Medicaid expansion issue this year.

"Take a vote, not a vacation," was the now infamous line that he rattled over during an emotion news conference last June.  He had just returned early from a trade mission to Israel to pressure GOP senators  to insure 470,000 of the state's needy families sans health care insurance.

The line "was probably not one of the more helpful actions in terms of building relationships with senators," he confesses during a taping of Evening with the Governor on Michigan Public TV.

But he's not done.

The senate GOP leader advised him to stay in Israel because the bill was not going to pass right now.

"It probably would have been good advice," he admits but then reflects, "I'm not sure I would have won either way" by coming home or staying there.

He's right.

He also confesses he should not have endorsed putting billboards in the districts of GOP senators sitting on the fence on the issue.

So how is it that this normally "even keel" governor got off into what he termed "a very emotional thing?"

"I am human," he begins with the obvious.  "It was literally a matter of life and death (passing the measure).  If we didn't do Healthy Michigan, people would die in our state…and now they have an opportunity to live."

He  concedes he got part of the strategy wrong, but his defenders and he would conclude in the end he got the issue right and he didn't gloss over either.
