Waterbury lights up new cross overlooking I-84

Posted: Updated:

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) - Three days before Christmas, Waterbury has restored a giant cross that has been a symbol of the city for nearly 60 years.

The Republican-American reports that with the flip of a switch about 4,500 lights were lit up Sunday before a crowd of more than 1,000 spectators.

The cross in sight of Interstate 84 is 52 feet high, stands on a seven-foot pedestal and has a 26-foot span.

Mayor Neil O'Leary and a friend announced plans earlier this year to buy Holy Land, the 17-acre former religious theme park. A nonprofit group raised thousands of dollars for the purchase.

A cross has been on the site since 1956, with several lit from the inside. The most recent $375,000 cross replaced a smaller and unlit stainless steel cross.
