Gunmen in Suitland caught on video carjacking victims

Posted: Updated:

Prince George's County police are asking for help from the public in tracking down several armed carjackers.

They confronted a man and a woman in a strip mall parking lot in Suitland last Friday, and the entire frightening encounter was captured on surveillance video.

Police are releasing the video on their website blog as part of a new featured called "Wanted Wednesdays." It's aimed at using the eyes and ears of social media to help locate wanted criminals in the county.

Corporal Maria McKinney says the woman accosted Friday tried to get away, but an armed man assaulted her and stole her personal belongings. She had called a male friend to pick her up, and when he arrived, he too was assaulted. Police are looking for the man's green 1996 Cadillac Eldorado.

Police say there were four suspects. One was waiting in a black SUV getaway car.

Area business owners say they would like to see more police patrols.

Ironically, the video was released the same day Prince George's County officials hosted a crime prevention forum for businesses in nearby Oxon Hill.

A hotel restaurant manager was shot and killed there last October trying to stop a gun leaving the hotel after a brazen holdup.

State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks says the forum was designed to educate businesses and was not the result of an uptick in commercial break-ins.

She says there has been a 19 percent decline in robberies this year.
