One of two latest Montgomery County smash-and-grab robberies caught on camera

GAITHERSBURG, Md. -

It has happened yet again. Twice overnight in Montgomery County.

One of the smash-and-grab robberies was at a Subway restaurant on Randolph Road in Silver Spring. The other was at Watkins Mill Beer and Wine Store on Russell Avenue in Gaithersburg.

The owner of that store, Sengoda Ramaswamy, says the suspect only got away with about $100.

His surveillance video shows the man with his head covered, wearing a mask and gloves. He appears to use some kind of device to smash a window next to the store's front door, then kicks the window to get inside. The man goes straight to the cash register, lottery machine and store safe and then leaves.

Halfway around the Beltway at a Subway restaurant, police say the smash-and-grab thief broke in, but got nothing.

Just last week, nine similar break-ins were reported at gas stations and convenience stores and a pharmacy in Montgomery County.

Police in Prince George's and Anne Arundel Counties are also investigating a string of smash-and-grabs to see if they are all related. Prince George's police have posted a video on their website blog with security tips for small businesses.
