High-rise apartment building fire in Northwest DC

WASHINGTON -

D.C. fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire at 2501 Calvert Street, NW that left several residents without a place to spend the night.

Flames broke out around 5:30 p.m. Monday in a fifth-floor unit of the apartment complex. Firefighters were on the scene within three minutes of receiving the call, according to DC Fire and EMS spokesperson Timothy Wilson.

He says the flames damaged one fifth-floor apartment and the unit above it. One person who lives in the apartment where the fire broke out was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A firefighter was also transported to the hospital with a minor injury.

Several units in the building sustained water and smoke damage.

Red Cross staffers were on scene to help the displaced and the Omni Shoreham hotel offered shelter to any of the residents who need it.
