Fitz File: Monday, December 16

Posted: Updated:
Here's what you need to know from The Fitz File for Monday, Monday 16, 2013:

VA AG RACE
Who actually won the race to be Attorney General? The recount starts in Fairfax County and the cities of Alexandria and Chesapeake and the rest of the state joins in Tuesday and Wednesday. Democrat Mark Herring leads Republican by a razor thin 165 votes. Nearly 100 election observers recruited by the two parties are in place at the Fairfax County courthouse. Disputed ballots go to Richmond on Thursday to a recount court. We should know the results by the end of the week.

OBAMACARE 1 WEEK
Tick rock. The Obamacare deadline is coming up in now just 7 days. Time is running out to get coverage from the Insurance marketplace in time for the January 1st . You have until December 23rd to select a plan in order for your health insurance to start by January 1st. The White House says that so since October 1st, "more than 1.2 million Americans are poised to gain coverage" under Obamacare -- and more are picking plans every day. But "poised" is a tricky word. Visiting the website and actually getting a policy are two different things and even the rosiest White Houses numbers fall far below where they wanted to be right now.

FED PENSION CUTS
If you become a Federal civilian employee after January get ready to kick in more for your pension than your coworkers. Under the House-passed budget bill: New workers will contribute 4.4% of their pay to their pension plans. Government workers hired in 2013 will continue paying 3.1% of their gross pay to help cover their pensions; those on the federal payroll before then, 0.8 %. AFGE, the union representing 630,000 federal workers is angry, but since pensions are becoming an endangered species for people not working in the government, federal employees likely get little sympathy. The Senate is expected to approve this week.

UNLOCKING CELL PHONES
Tired of cell phone companies telling you what phones you can and can't use, or can only buy at their prices? Well the White House says they've "heard you now". Over 114,000 people signed a White House.gov petition asking for freedom of cell phone unlocking -- to allow you to use your mobile devices on any compatible network you choose. Now I'm response to the outcry the nation’s largest wireless carriers along with the FCC SAY they will create a series of voluntary “unlocking principles” to help bring some relief to consumers in the next few months.
