Compton Police Chase Ends in Deadly Crash

Posted: Updated:
A police chase in Compton ended in a fiery crash that killed 4 people, after the driver fleeing from police slammed into another car.

"I see the car burning on fire, I heard the people yelling like asking for help. Ahhh, you know, screaming and things. And the cops were trying to take them out but the fire was too big," said Richard Cheng, who lives near the scene of the crash.

One of the victims was 30-year-old Stacey Gray, an innocent bystander and mother of 3 little girls, who was driving home.  The car involved in the Police chase slammed into Gray's car.

"It doesn't make sense that from a decision that other people make someone else can lose their life. That's not right," said Shameka Smith, one of Gray's best friends.

The horrific chain of events started with reports of shots fired around midnight.  Compton deputies tried to pull over a car that may have been involved.  Three people were in the car and police say the driver took off, leading deputies on a chase, then ran a red light and caused the wreck.

The woman behind the wheel was 20-year-old Shawnice Osborne, according to her grandparents who have no idea why she would run from police.

"It wasn't like her to run. So, I don't really know what happened," said Nadine Starks, Osborne's grandmother.

"She was just with friends, it just so happens she made a bad choice," said George Starks, Osborne's grandfather.

There were two other passengers in the suspect's car; friends say one of them was named "K.B."

"He was a family person, he was a nice man. He was a rapper, up and coming rapper.  He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time messing with the wrong person," said Darilius Johnson, K.B.'s friend.

Osborne's grandparents say this all a huge tragedy.   "Our heart goes out to all of those involved, the other families involved.  I mean, I know that they're hurting.  We are too," said Starks.

It's still unclear if the three suspects involved in the chase, were in fact involved in the earlier shooting.
