Officer arrested after overnight pursuit

A Tempe police officer was arrested after barricading himself in a vehicle at the end of a police pursuit that shut down the Loop 202 near Alma School overnight.

30-year-old Garrett Peterson, a member of Tempe Police, was arrested sometime around 1 a.m. Saturday, according to a spokesperson with the agency.  Peterson is a patrol officer who has been with the department since 2007.  He is now on administrative leave.

A Gilbert Police spokesperson says officers were called to the home of Peterson's ex-wife:  investigators were looking into phone and text message threats that he allegedly made, when Peterson drove by his ex-wife's home.  Officers tried to pull him over but he did not stop.

DPS officers stopped Peterson on the westbound Loop 202 at Alma School, authorities say.  Peterson reportedly showed officers a pistol and refused to leave the vehicle.  A female in the passenger seat did leave the vehicle.

SWAT teams spoke with Peterson for nearly an hour until he surrendered, police say.  Peterson is now facing charges of felony endangerment, DUI, felony flight, reckless driving and threats and intimidation.
