Six teens are in police custody after a heated confrontation with a man led to an exchange of words and, ultimately, gun fire.

Harper Woods Police Chief Jim Burke was on the close call that left the victim's ride riddled with bullets. It was a frightening encounter with roughly a dozen rowdy teens. It all began after security kicked them out of Eastland Mall for making a scene.

They were walking down Kelly Road when they spotted the 49-year-old Eastpointe man and, according to police, began harassing him.

"There was a bunch of words exchanged, a verbal altercation. Threats were made," says Chief Burke.

But nothing happened. The victim went on to pick up his vehicle from a nearby repair shop. He spotted the teens again while driving down Elkhart, and later a Harper Woods cop.

"Before he could get to the uniformed officer they recognized him, saw him. One of the members of the group just came running up, point blank, pulled a gun out of his waistband, charged at him and tried to kill him," says Chief Burke.

At least two shots were fired. None penetrated the car.

Chief Burke says, "He's very lucky to be alive, honestly. It's a terrible incident. He did the right thing, he saw the threat - took off."

The teens did the same and police followed, and later arrested half a dozen people. All will likely be booked on assault charges.

Police are looking for four or six more people who may have been involved in the shooting. If you have any information about what happened call the Harper Woods Police Department.
