Colorado School Shooting Leaves One Dead, Two Wounded

Posted: Updated:

One day before the anniversary of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, there has been another school shooting, this time in Centennial, Colorado. A senior at Arapahoe High School armed himself with a shotgun and went looking for a specific teacher by name. According to authorities, the teacher heard the gunman was after him and left the building, apparently in an attempt to get the shooter to do the same. That didn't work.

Police say one student was shot and seriously wounded when he tried to disarm the gunman. A second student was also shot. His injuries are described as minor. An army of law enforcement officers raced to the scene and rushed into the school right away. They discovered the gunman about twenty minutes later dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Terrified students with their hands raised in the air were evacuated from the school in a scene eerily reminiscent of the Columbine High shooting in 1999 by two school seniors that left 12 students and a teacher dead. As in today's shooting, the gunmen in that massacre committed suicide as well. In fact, Arapahoe High is located fewer than ten miles from Columbine and is in the same county where James Holmes is accused of shooting and killing 12 people at a movie theater last year in Aurora.

Arapahoe High has about 2,000 students in all and is located in a relatively affluent suburb outside of Denver.

President Barack Obama has been briefed on the shooting which has left students, school staff and parents shocked, scared and traumatized.
