WILMINGTON, De. -

A driver was cited for drug possession after a collision with a police cruiser that sent one officer to the hospital with injures Thursday night.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 p.m. as a fully marked Wilmington Police cruiser was responding to a priority complaint with emergency equipment activated. The cruiser, operated by a 36 year old 13 year veteran of the police department, was traveling west on W. 2nd Street through the intersection of N. Clayton Street. A northbound 1999 Honda Civic, operated by Ian Thomas of Wilmington, proceeded through a green light at the intersection and struck the cruiser on the left front side. The Honda then stuck a 2001 Dodge Durango parked on the south side of the 1600 block of W. 2nd Street before coming to a stop.

Ian Thomas then exited his vehicle and attempted to discard 19 bags of heroin and two hypodermic needles. Officers took Thomas into custody and located a small bag of crack cocaine on his person. The passenger of the police cruiser, a 27 year old officer in his first year with the department, was treated for a neck injury at Wilmington Hospital and released.

Thomas was arraigned at JP Court 11 and released after posting $150 secured bail
