Fitz File: Friday, December 13

Posted: Updated:
Here's what you need to know from The Fitz File for Friday, December 13, 2013:

HEALTHCARE SIGNUP DEADLINE
If you need healthcare from the Obamacare website, you've got 10 days to do it. New numbers suggest the nation's health care rolls still aren't filling up fast enough. You have to sign up by December 23, if you want to have coverage by the January 1 deadline. Health and Human Services says 364,682 signed up for coverage under the law as of November 30. That's three times the October number. It's a lot less than the 1.2 million HHS said would have enrolled by the end of November. The goal was to sign up 7 million people by March 31. That gap looks bigger everyday.

REPUBLICAN CIVIL WAR?
House Speaker John Boehner fired the first shot yesterday and now things could be messy. After months of stories of Boehner's "grumbling" at House Tea Party conservatives, now it's all come publicly pilling out as an animated, blustery speaker blasted Conservative groups and Tea Party forces for hijacking the GOP agenda and causing last fall's shutdown. So is this the first step of the rise of the moderates in the Republican party? Or is it Boehner's beginning of the end as speaker if the Tea Partiers now turn their anger against him and mount a challenger to him?

UNLOCKING CELL PHONES
Tired of cell phone companies telling you what phones you can and can't use, or can only buy at their prices? Well, the White House says they've "heard you now." Over 114,000 people signed a WhiteHouse.gov petition asking for freedom of cell phone unlocking -- to allow you to use your mobile devices on any compatible network you choose.  Now in response to the outcry, the nation’s largest wireless carriers along with the FCC say they will create a series of voluntary “unlocking principles” to help bring some relief to consumers in the next few months.

AMERICAN SPY HELD BY IRAN
Things have been changing rapidly with the US-Iran relationship. Now, a new development could either speed a reconciliation or push the two sides further apart. In March 2007, retired FBI agent Robert Levinson was on an Iranian resort island where he was captured by Iran. For years, the U.S. has insisted he he was a private investigator tracking cigarette smuggling. Now an AP investigation reveals Levinson was in fact working as an unauthorized CIA operative. The revelation could help finally speed his release now by the Iranians, or maybe deepen the divide.
