TEMPE, Ariz. -

Law enforcement agencies say a car jacking suspect jumped off a Loop 202 bridge, falling 60 feet -- all to escape from police after a high speed pursuit.

"He jumped off the edge of the bridge and landed on the bottom," said Deputy Chief Darrell Duty of the Tempe Fire Department.

Police identified 44-year-old Edmund Powers as the man who landed outside of the water -- on to the rocky bottom and survived.

"He's alive, he is conscious.. he's following commands," said Duty.

It all happened around 3:30 a.m., but the manhunt for Powers started house before -- around 9 p.m. Thursday night.  That's when police say Powers carjacked a woman waiting outside of the Men's Warehouse at Tempe Marketplace.

The woman was waiting for her boyfriend to close a store when Powers climbed into the 1988 Ford Crown Victoria.  When she questioned him, police say Powers pulled out a Taser, sparked it and then took off in the car.  The woman was not hurt.

Authorities followed the Powers, but eventually lost him. A description of the Crown Victoria was sent out and Mesa Police were able to find it after the suspect reportedly robbed another person near Broadway and Ellsworth around 3 a.m.

Officers pursued the car, which was traveling at over 100 miles per hour onto Loop 202 near McClintock.  The pursuit ended when Department of Public Safety officers used stop sticks.

Instead of stopping, Powers abandoned the car and then took the plunge -- but it wasn't until an hour later that medics were able to get to the man and transport him to a hospital.  Officials say he faces life threatening injuries.

"It's always a little tricky being the middle of the night.. down at the river bottom.. if you've been down in this area before, it takes a lot of manpower to get him out of here," said Duty.

A woman in the car with Powers was being questioned.  Her name was not released.

According to police, Powers still had several of the victim's possessions when he was found.

The freeways were restricted for several hours on Friday morning.
