Ex-Senate staffer appears in court on child porn charges

WASHINGTON -

The former chief of staff for Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander made his first court appearance Thursday afternoon.

Still dressed in the clothes he was wearing during his arrest Wednesday, Jesse Ryan Loskarn was ordered to remain in the custody of U.S. marshals until his preliminary hearing Monday.

The 35-year-old long-time Capitol Hill staffer is charged with possessing and attempting to distribute child pornography. He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

Agents with the U.S. Postal Service say they used a battering ram to break in the front door of Loskarn's rowhouse on Burke Street in Southeast D.C. Wednesday afternoon. They say he was upstairs leaning out a second floor window and hiding on a roof ledge what turned out to be a portable hard drive.

Federal investigators say in the suspect's home, they found images of men sexually assaulting young girls and pornographic videos involving young boys and girls. And that from November 2010 through March 2011, Loskarn bought a number of videos from a Canadian company that produces child pornography.

"The majority of these films feature young nude boys," according to the arresting documents.

Loskarn was Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander's chief of staff for the past year. He had held a series of jobs with Republican congressmen and committees over the past 13 years.

In a statement Wednesday night, Alexander said he was taking swift action.

"The courts will judge Mr. Loskarn's guilt or innocence, but under these circumstances, he cannot continue to fulfill his duties as chief of staff of this office. Therefore, as of today, I have removed him from the payroll."
