Ex-DC teacher pleads guilty to child porn charges

WASHINGTON -

A former teacher at the District’s Beauvoir School pleaded guilty Thursday to three counts of producing child pornography.

Eric Toth admitted taking pictures of naked boys and placing cameras disguised as air fresheners in the school’s bathrooms.

The admitted sexual predator was on the run for five years before his capture in Nicaragua earlier this year.

Toth admitted in court to being a pedophile who not only produced child pornography, but collected and shared it as well.

The former teacher, camp counselor and tutor told a federal court judge the government had enough evidence to support the charges against him.

Court filings in the case against Toth have previously revealed ways in which the former Beauvoir teacher snapped naked photos of pre-pubescent boys in the classroom and other locations after winning the children's trust and the trust of their parents.

But in the court hearing Thursday, prosecutor Cassidy Pinegar revealed new information about Toth and the way he collected his images.

Placing cameras disguised as air fresheners in the school’s bathrooms as well as bathrooms in undisclosed off-campus locations.

"The conduct here was heinous,” said U.S. Attorney Ron Machen in an interview Thursday. “There were hidden cameras to capture images of the children in the urinals and the showers, and again, this is a man who obtained positions of trust in the community to exploit children. It was that simple.”

The prosecutor also revealed Toth continued to search for and collect child porn while on the run in Arizona, Texas and Nicaragua where he was finally arrested.

"This is typical of this type of offense,” said Timothy Gallagher, Special Agent in Charge of the Criminal Division of the FBI’s Washington Field Office. “When we catch them, we get their whole cache and it’s usually thousands and thousands of images of child pornography."

For example, when the FBI looked inside the laptop Toth had in Nicaragua, they found seven videos and 1,140 images depicting child pornography.

"Eric Toth was an extremely dangerous individual,” said Gallagher. “He utilized his skills as a teacher, a counselor, as a tutor to gain the trusts of the parents, to gain the trust of the children, and once he had the trusts of the parents, it made it easier to exploit the children and it made it harder for them to come forward.”

Court documents show Toth saved the images he recorded and collected on hard drives, thumb drives and camcorders.

"I don't think there is any greater danger to our community than the danger presented by child predators to our children,” Machen said. “That is our most important asset and we have to go to the greatest lengths possible to protect them.”

So far this year, the U.S. Attorneys Office has secured 20 convictions in child pornography cases.

Toth was able to stay on the run by stealing other peoples’ identities and was only caught when a tourist in Nicaragua recognized him from a photo on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List.

He will be sentenced March 11.
