Shooting victim dies, police arrest suspect

PHOENIX -

A police search is underway to track down a man who they say opened fire inside a Phoenix apartment complex, killing a man while two young children were just a few feet away.

The suspect's name is Kheylon Cunningham.  The 28-year-old has a history of trouble with the law.

After the shooting, police searched the area of 23rd Avenue and Indian School Road with K-9s and they couldn't find their suspect.

Authorities believe Cunningham opened fire on the victim who was inside an apartment with the suspect's ex-girlfriend.

While running an errand, one neighbor spotted the fleeing suspect.

"On the way back, I was coming through the alley and I heard them arguing on the way there, but when I was coming back, I hear gunshots. I saw a dude with a hoodie and he took off through the alley and he started going east.. east down the canal," said Luis Rodriguez.

Thursday afternoon, the victim's brother and friends came by the crime scene.  They tell FOX 10 the victim was there in the morning visiting his child.

Police believe that's when the suspect came over and attacked his ex-girlfriend.  The victim, 19-year-old Lemuel Warren, tried to stop the fight and the suspect opened fire in front of two children.

"You hate for some kids to have to go through this or anyone to have to see it, but we are fortunate that the kids are okay.. it was an infant and a 6-year-old," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump.

After looking all morning, police called off the search.  Neighbors say they've seen the suspect around.

"The few times I met him, I have got nothing bad to say.  He is pretty cool.  He has got a job.  He is collected.  He handles his business.  He has got his own apartment," said Crystal Blue.

But Cunningham has a criminal history that includes armed robbery.

UPDATE: Cunningham was arrested late Thursday night.  According to Sgt. Trent Crump, he was hiding in a nearby apartment.  He was booked for first degree murder, burglary and aggravated assault.
