Knockout game at Rikers Island

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Rikers Island is a tough place on a good day, but now going to work for correction officers has become even more dangerous.

It looks like the crime fad known as the knockout game has spread to Rikers Island, with women officers the main targets. I spoke exclusively with one female C.O. who is still reeling from a punch to the face.

We have an exclusive picture of the damage the woman said was done to her on November 30, 2013, on Rikers Island. The 22-year-old rookie correction officer told me the knockout game we've seen spread across the country is also spreading inside the jail.

"Came right out of the bathroom and punched me in my eye," she said.

Her eye socket was fractured and may need surgery. She has a black eye and her vision remains blurry. She said it came out of nowhere.

All the attention around the knockout game is giving those on lockdown a new way to prove just how bad they are, said correction officers union V.P. Liz Castro.

The injured C.O. told me she is depressed and scared by what happened, but is determined to wear her uniform again after she heals.

We reached out to the city's Correction Department, which said that correction officers are essential members of the law enforcement community and that the department takes any attacks against officers very seriously.

God's Love We Deliver provides meals to people in the New York City area who are too sick to shop and cook for themselves. Clients also receive birthday cards that are decorated by local school students. Sometimes a cake is the only birthday gift that God's Love's clients will receive.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.

Renting out someone's apartment is an easy way to get an inexpensive place to stay if you're a tourist, and cheaper and more convenient than most hotels. But now the government is stepping in and trying to get a handle on a booming business that may not be playing by the rules. State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is squaring off in court with multi-million dollar Internet company Airbnb.
