Cops: Man steals dead artist's works before calling 911

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A New York man is accused of stealing several pieces of artwork from a dead artist who once collaborated with Andy Warhol.

The New York State Police say that 35-year-old Hiram Noel Mendez of Cortlandt Manor had discovered Ronald Cutrone dead in the artist's Lake Peekskill home and then left without contacting authorities.

At some point, police say he returned back to the home and stole several pieces of artwork before eventually calling 911 several hours later.

Police say the death took place in July but the arrest didn't come until a five month long investigation.

Some of the artwork has been recovered by the state police with several pieces still unaccounted for, according to authorities.

Cutrone's death is not considered suspicious with the cause of death still pending toxicology results.

Mendez was arraigned on burglary, petit larceny and obstruction charges in the Putnam Valley Court and was sent to jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

He is due to reappear back in court on Dec. 12, 2013.

Anyone with information is asked to call state police at 914-737-7171. They say that all calls will be kept confidential.
