"Every day you're being told, 'Parents, stop leaving your babies in the house alone,' 'Stop leaving them in the cars alone.' When we gonna stop?"

It's a question Kevin Washington may spend years pondering. The 36-year-old father is accused of leaving his two sons, Damien and Mekhi, home alone Friday. Some time later the house caught fire. The boys were still inside.

"Before I could get out the house and get to the hospital she called back to say that Damien didn't make it ... and by the time we got there to Children's for Mekhi, he didn't make it either."

Ceola Willis is the boys' aunt and did not bat an eye when she learned Washington was charged with child abuse and involuntary manslaughter. The father told authorities he stepped out from the house momentarily; neighbors say he left to pick up cigarettes.

"Now when you're faced with these consequences, was it worth it? Your babies gone; your faced with jail time, prison time," Willis says.

"He left them kids by themselves, a four and a one year old. That's four and one. There's nothing they can do for themselves," says cousin Quenetta Jones.

The boys' mother, Andrea Williams, was not home when the fire happened. She was arrested on a drunken driving charge the night before. She's since been released for a 10 day bereavement period.

Then, there are the other three children who lost their belongings, their home and their siblings.

"You got a 12-year-old sister, an 8-year-old brother and a 6-year-old brother. They lost they're two little brothers," says Willis.

Still a couple of questions are still unanswered: How long were the boys left home alone? How did the fire begin? Would the boys have survived had their dad been with them?

Investigators are still getting to the bottom of it and, as for Kevin Washington, if convicted on the manslaughter and child abuse charges he could spend 15 years in jail.
