WHITTIER (CNS) - A pedestrian was hospitalized with serious injuries after being struck by a pickup truck in Whittier, police said today.

The pedestrian, identified by Lt. Steve Dean of the Whittier Police Department as 31-year-old Sam James of Whittier, was struck as he attempted to cross the northbound lane of the 8400 block of Painter Avenue around 10:20 p.m. Friday night.

Dean said the truck, driven by Ricardo Zarace, who is in his mid-20s and also of Whittier, struck James about 30-45 feet short of the intersection with Lambert Road.

James suffered head injuries and was unconscious when he was transported to a hospital, Dean said. He described the victim's condition as "apparently serious".

Dean said no charges had been filed.
