Phoenix Police: Officer shoots hatchet-wielding suspect

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Phoenix Police say a man on a bicycle wielding a hatchet and other weapons confronted officers Friday night.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson says Isaac Lankisch was shot late Friday when he refused to listen to officer's commands and threw a hatchet at an officer.  That's when officers fired on the man.

Police had been called to the scene, near 26th Avenue and Elm, when they were approached by a victim who said he was swinging a hatched at that individual.

After the officer fired the weapon, Lankisch was taken to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

The officer who fired the weapon has been with the Phoenix Police Department for nine years.  No officers were injured.  Police are continuing their investigation.
