National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony: What you need to know

WASHINGTON -

The National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on the Ellipse Friday afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The gates will open at 3 p.m. only for guest who have tickets. Ticket-holders will enter from the west side on 17th Street in Northwest at the Ellipse.

What you need to know about the ceremony:

Street Closures

The following street closures will impact traffic beginning at 3 p.m. and will open once the ceremony has concluded.

  • 15th Street, NW from Constitution Avenue, NW to E Street, NW
  • 15th Street, NW and New York Avenue, NW
  • 15th Street, NW and G Street, NW
  • 15th Street, NW and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
  • 15th Street, NW and F Street, NW
  • 15th Street, NW and Constitution Avenue, NW
  • 17th Street, NW Northbound from Constitution Avenue, NW to State Place/New York Avenue, NW
  • 17th Street, NW from C Street, NW to E Street, NW
  • 18th Street, NW Eastbound from D Street to E Street, NW

No Truck Zone

Constitution Avenue, NW between 14th Street, NW & 18th Street, NW

Security Information

All attendees must go through security screening before entering the ceremony. Please allow additional time for this security measure, lines are expected to be long. The use of umbrellas is authorized for this event due to inclement weather.

The following items are prohibited from the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony due to safety precautions.

  • Leatherman brand tools (or similar)
  • Screwdrivers (or similar)
  • Glass bottles
  • Tripods
  • Coolers
  • Air-horns
  • Laser pointers
  • Aerosol containers
  • Soda cans
  • Sticks/poles
  • Baseballs, softballs, etc.
  • Animals (other than helper/guide dogs)
