WASHINGTON -

A suspect has died and a police officer was wounded Tuesday night in the Trinidad neighborhood of Northeast D.C.

Police say the shooting occurred in the 1300 block of Queen Street in Northeast D.C. at around 9:05 p.m.

D.C. police say officers from the Narcotics and Special Investigations Division and Gun Recovery Unit attempted to stop a suspect who fired a handgun at officers, striking one of them. The officers returned fire and struck 19-year-old Darius Jamal Murphy of Northeast D.C.

Police say the male officer was taken to the hospital and was conscious and breathing. A police source tells FOX 5 he was shot in the leg. The officer was part of a gun recovery unit working in the area.

Murphy was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
