Detroit is eligible for bankruptcy.

And that's a tough pill for Doug Grant to swallow.

"This is what I take for my cancer at this point in time. For seizures that come on because of the cancer," says Grant as he shows his bottles of pills to Fox 2's Randy Wimbley.

Grant worked for Detroit EMS for 25 years. He was diagnosed with brain cancer when he retired in May.

"I'm constantly undergoing medications for it; I've gone through radiation for it," he shares. All of it is becoming more costly, and not just because of changes to his health care but also because of the changes that are undoubtedly coming to his pension. He says it costs about $1,200 to cover him, his wife and two of his children who are full-time college students.

Judge Steven Rhodes wants Orr to do whatever possible to avoid deep cuts to pensions.

"We're trying to be very thoughtful, measured and humane about what we have to do," Orr said Tuesday after the bankruptcy decision was announced.

"We didn't fight for higher pay because we knew we were getting a pension. And mine came down; I just retired back in May and now we're finding out it's probably not going to exist," Grant says.

AFSCME, which represents many of Detroit's retirees, has already filed an appeal. Pensions will not have any additional protection in bankruptcy.
