How to boost your metabolism

Around the holidays is a great time of the year to start understanding just how many calories our body can take.  

Basal Metabolic Calculators use your weight, height and age, then factor in activity level, to tell you how many calories you need a day.
 
"I think it's good to know your baseline, so that, especially if you're tracking how much you're eating, you can kind of see how much over you are so that you can factor in your exercise, just so you can help balance things a little bit better," says Mayssoun Hamade, a registered dietician at Providence Hospital.

She shares her secret to boosting your metabolism.
 
"The best way to speed up metabolism, and everyone loves when I say this, is eating more. And what I mean by that - is just making sure you're having the small, frequent meals every 3-4 hours, a nice healthy snack, avoiding the big meals all at one time and definitely avoiding crash diets."

She says a body burns more calories digesting protein than it would carbs or fats.

To take a slow metabolism and put it in fast gear: exercise, drink lots of water and get the right amount of sleep. Hamade says spicy foods help accelerate the metabolism, too.
