Money stolen from red kettles, safe at DC Salvation Army office

Posted: Updated:

D.C. police are still trying to find the burglars who broke into a Salvation Army in Southeast D.C. on Sunday and took donations from their Red Kettle collections.

It is believed the thieves took close to $10,000.

“This was some of the money that was left from the incident that was left on the floor in the buckets as they tore open the buckets,” said Maj. Lewis Reckline, National Capital Area Commander at the Salvation Army.

$240.74 was all that was left after two masked burglars broke into the Salvation Army and got into a safe and red kettles.

Officials at the Salvation Army believe the burglars climbed up onto a third-floor deck and smashed a window to unlock a door. Then they headed to a room where the kettles were being held.

After taking the money, the burglars came down to the second floor and came face-to-face with a security guard. One of the suspects pulled a knife.

No one was injured in the incident.

FOX 5 was back at the crime scene as the smashed window was being replaced. We found detectives retrieving more video and signs that fingerprinting had already taken place.

D.C. police have released the security video from the burglary (view video above) and Reckline hopes someone will recognize the suspects.

The Salvation Army said it is not ruling out someone with inside information. The suspects apparently knew where the money was kept and were even able to access a safe.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.
