Student teacher accused of having sexual relationship with underage girl

TEMPE, Ariz. -

An Arizona State University student who was teaching math at Tempe High School is now facing sexual misconduct charges.

Tempe police say they arrested 26-year-old Joel Calderon last week after learning about a possible relationship between him and a female student at Tempe High. Police were initially contacted by school administrators.

According to authorities, Calderon used social media to get to know the underage girl and that the two had sex multiple times at his home.  Sgt. Michael Pooley says Calderon admitted to the inappropriate relationship with the 16-year-old student during an interview.

Court documents say the alleged instances of sexual contact happened in early November and that Calderon was fired from his position.

Calderon is facing six counts of sexual conduct with a minor. It's not immediately clear if he has an attorney.

Only one alleged victim has been identified at this time.  Pooley says the investigation is ongoing, and there's a possibility of additional charges.

If you have any information about this case, call the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311.
