TUCSON, Ariz. -

A disturbing story out of southern Arizona where three girls have been rescued after they were allegedly held captive by their mother and stepfather for more than two years.

Police say a 12 and 13-year-old girl were able to escape and run to a neighbor's house for help.  They later told authorities that their stepfather, Fernando Richter, tried to kick in their bedroom door and then threatened them with a knife.

When officers showed up, they not only found the two girls, but also their 17-year-old sister who was locked away in a bedroom.

"During the course of that investigation, it was alleged by the girls that they had been imprisoned within their bedrooms for approximately that last two years," said Tucson Police Capt. Mike Gillooly.  "All three juveniles were extremely dirty.. and malnourished and stated they had not bathed within the last four to six months."

"If there was kids, they never came out and played.  We have kids all over this neighborhood and they had to try extra hard to keep themselves excluded.. obviously someone would have noticed something," said a neighbor.

The girls told police that they were only fed once a day.  And the two young girls say they had not seen their older sister in two years.  All three are now in protective custody.

Their mother, Sophia Richter, and stepfather, Fernando Richter, are in jail, facing kidnapping and abuse charges.
