GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - A Goodyear man has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge in the death of his grandmother, whose body was found in the desert southwest of Phoenix.

Goodyear police say 40-year-old Jason Eric Howell remains in custody on $1 million bond. He has a Jan. 7 initial pre-trial conference.

Prosecutors say Howell also was indicted on charges of attempted first-degree murder, hindering prosecution and abandoning a body.

Howell led police investigators to the desert about 75 miles southwest of Phoenix where 78-year-old Helen Jean Lee's body was found on Nov. 2.

Police believe Howell killed Lee around Oct. 30. They say he allegedly beat his grandmother with a shovel before slitting her throat because he was upset with her strict curfew rules and how much she charged him for rent.
