Unlikely coalition asks Cobb Co. to delay vote on Braves deal

Posted: Updated:
COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

A group of Cobb County residents who feel the county is moving too quickly on plans for a new Atlanta Braves stadium sounded off on Monday.

The newly-formed organization called Citizens for Governmental Transparency held a news conference on the Cobb County Square in an effort to make their opinions known.

Opponents sent a letter to Cobb County Commissioners asking for a 60-day delay in Tuesday's planned vote to approve the deal. Citizens for Government Transparency is a committee made up of individuals and organizations who say that they should be informed and engaged when significant tax dollars are being obligated.  The diverse coalition includes Atlanta Tea Party Patriots, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Sierra Club and Common Cause.

But representatives from the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, the Cumberland Community Improvement District and other businesses braved the cold weather on Monday in newly-printed t-shirts to say there should be no delay in moving forward with plans for the $672 million stadium complex.

Cobb County Commissioners got an earful from constituents for and against the proposal at three packed town hall meetings on Monday.

Despite the calls to delay the vote, Cobb County Commission Chairman Tim Lee said it will go on as scheduled on Tuesday.
